On the 2nd episode of Storytellers & Storysellers, I sat down with Sudeep Lahiri, VP Content & Strategy at One Digital Entertainment, and actor, Ahsaas Channa, to talk about the influencer economy in India. The influencer business didn't exist till about 5 years ago, and now it is powering one of the most important shared culture of our time. I couldn't think of anyone better than Ahsaas to begin talking about influencers with. I was educated much by the internet as by anyone and one of the most important parts of my learning was my education in indie music. Limewire, Kazaa, Napster, Youtube and Last.fm were my sources of new music as I spent years wondering when the Indian music scene will move past Bollywood. And then Indian hip hop happened. A new frontier opened up with authentic Indian musicians spitting their own rap over authentic Indian beats. How did Indian hip hop do the unthinkable and take centre stage in Indian popular music? I decided to ask two people who might have a clue. The internet in India is 75% men and 25% of women, making India's digital gender gap the widest in the world. It's clearly reflected by how women get portrayed in this content and what kind of opportunities really come their way. If you go on TV, the typical "Saas Bahu" show will have you believe that all women really want to do is serve their husbands or scheme against other women and if we watch the typical comedy show it will portray women as a prop for male humour. Thankfully there are some women creators online who have really taken matters in their own hands to drive a change in this mindset. In this episode, we talk to two wonderful women who are leading this charge and changing the landscape for female creators. First up, Anisha Dixit who is better known as 'Rickshawali' talks about how she became a comedy creator. We'll also talk to Tracy Dsouza, the boss lady behind Girliyapa, an all-women team that has created its own brand of very accessible humour balanced with hard-hitting satire. Tracy talks about the courage and conviction to be a woman boss in entertainment. We will also dig deeper into how they work with brands, how their teams perceive them as women leaders and what they think is going to be the future for women creators in India. It happened on a frigid winter night. First, a sudden moment of terror. Then, a frantic search to find a costumed killer. “Internal Affairs,” Dateline’s next original podcast series, takes us to northern Colorado, and into an obsessive and deadly romantic affair. Reported by Josh Mankiewicz, it’s a story about bad choices, a fatal attraction and men and women who proudly wore badges at work--while living lies at home. And when the day of reckoning came, the people with the badges had to investigate their own.
